MOSCOW, December 1People's Artist of the USSR, conductor, general director and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev, speaking about his appointment as the new general director of the Bolshoi Theater, said that this is a huge responsibility, noting the active cooperation of the two theaters over the past 10 years and emphasizing that the ex-director of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin did everything possible to ensure that the theater enriched its collection of productions.
«The responsibility is enormous. I know that Vladimir Georgievich (Urin — ed.) did everything possible to ensure that in difficult years the Bolshoi Theater enriched the collection of its wonderful productions… We have collaborated very actively over the past 10 years. More than 30 leading singers of the Mariinsky Theater perform at stage of the Bolshoi Theater. These are the singers whom I raised, whom I took to the theater. Now they perform all over Russia and all over the world,» Gergiev said at the Bolshoi Theater.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova on Friday introduced the new general director of the Bolshoi Theater Gergiev, who replaced Urin, who wrote a letter of resignation of his own free will.
Previously, the Bolshoi Theater refused to comment on information about a possible merger with the Mariinsky Theater. In turn, the special representative of the Russian President for international cultural cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoy, explained to journalists that the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters cannot be united, but both institutions can be led by Gergiev.
Last year, Putin at a meeting with laureates of awards in the field of culture and art invited Gergiev to think about creating a joint directorate of the Bolshoi Theater and the Mariinsky Theater. A year later, on May 2 of this year, at a meeting with Putin, Gergiev admitted that he was ready for large-scale tasks in working with theaters, “a thorough analysis of the state of 20-30 theaters in Russia.” He emphasized that he could put maximum effort into solving the theaters’ problems. In addition, Gergiev told the president about the idea of creating four large cultural centers.
