This is no place to hide for an out-of-shape goalie. Andre Onana may still have the public support of Erik Ten Hag, but time and patience are not on his side.
It is unacceptable for Manchester United to have a goalkeeper making so many consistent mistakes. The longer this goes on, the more vulnerable he will become.
Outfield players can ease their way into a new team and find better form. Some new recruits can be indulged for a year before being judged, and managers beg for understanding if they have problems early on.
Goalkeepers are too important to be indulged. As a last line of defense, mistakes should be random rather than a recurring trend.
When goalkeepers lose confidence, everyone feels it; fans, teammates, opponents and the media.
When faith is destroyed, it quickly becomes a serious problem for the team and coach. Great goalkeepers turn defeats into draws and draws into narrow victories, especially at the biggest clubs. For a team aiming for the biggest trophies, the art of being a world-class goalkeeper is to do the little that is asked of you brilliantly.
Unfortunately for Onana, early in his United career he was responsible for turning wins into draws and draws into losses.
