Rishi Sunak and his family wish their constituents a Merry Christmas
Rishi Sunak said he is a “huge fan” of Christmas music and revealed, that he started listening to holiday songs in November.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to Shane MacGowan — frontman of the Pogues, best known for their seasonal classic Fairytale of New York — after his death at the age of 65 on Thursday.
Asked what he thought of McGowan's death during his trip to the Cop28 climate change summit, Mr Sunak said: «Well, I'm a fan of Christmas music in general, which is obviously his main song. [which] I know.”
“I'm a big fan of Christmas music and I feel like I've been exposed by… [journalist] Tim Shipman? Someone exposed me for this when I was chancellor because, as I recall, they accidentally caught me singing Michael Bublé before some interview.
“So, about two weeks ago I had Christmas music and everyone was yelling at me and then I did it in private. Now it's public, now I can do it publicly. Come on, we were at the Downing Street Christmas market today! Everything is fine, everything is very good, everything is very good.”
Mr Sunak was joined by businesses and charities on Thursday as he switched on the Christmas lights outside No 10, turning Downing Street into a Christmas market in the afternoon.
A good name for a Christmas card
He also joked that he was grateful to his mother for giving him a short name to save him time writing «thousands» of Christmas cards to members of the public.
“Because I do a lot about signing Christmas cards in this job… I sign all these cards and I do it at night, and that's basically my time. I put on Christmas music and I just sit there and sign the signature, and I've been doing that for about 10 days now.
«[I sign] thousands, yeah, but I called my mom the last time I did it. , and said, “Thank God you gave me a name that only has five letters.”
“If it had been a 10-letter name, it would probably have taken twice as long. So much Christmas music, including [Shane's], lately… This song is on every Christmas playlist. Such a big loss, a huge loss.»
Fairytale of New York is a duet with Irish singer Kirsty McCall, who died in a speedboat accident aged 41 in 2000.
It Was So was first released in 1987, when it reached number two in the UK Christmas charts, and is expected to continue this winter he will top the charts after McGowan's death.
