A new study has identified seven essential habits that reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer by 30%. More than 90 thousand Britons took part in the analysis. Key recommendations include maintaining a healthy diet, physical activity and maintaining a normal weight.
Eating 400 grams of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes per day is one lifestyle option that can help maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI). The list of restrictions included: excessive consumption of fast food, red and processed meat, and alcohol. Such data were presented in the journal BMC Medicine.
According to a study by the University of Newcastle, which involved more than 90 thousand Britons, strict adherence to this advice led to a 30 percent reduction in the risk of gallbladder cancer. The results show that the incidence of liver and ovarian cancer is reduced by more than one fifth.
The study was conducted to find out whether the seven recommendations set by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR) in 2018 are effective.
The recommendations included physical activity for 10 hours per week, eating less than 500 grams of processed meat and avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption to less than 14 units per week (6 glasses of beer or 10 small glasses of wine).
The analysis found that strict adherence to these habits led to a reduced risk cancer. Each recommendation that patients followed reduced their risk by 7%.
The scientists also found that each one-point increase in the score was associated with a 10% lower risk of breast cancer, a 10% lower risk of colorectal cancer, and a 10% lower risk of colorectal cancer. kidney – by 18%, esophageal cancer by 16%, liver – by 22%, ovaries – by 24% and gallbladder – by 30%.
The researchers emphasized that because their study was observational in nature, they did not know for sure that the lower cancer risk was due to adherence to the seven recommendations.
