“The money was shared”: why a Ukrainian deputy detonated grenades in the village council

The bomber found defenders in Ukrainian society

In Ukraine, a municipal deputy from Vladimir Zelensky's Servant of the People party, Sergei Batrin, threw a grenade into the hall, wanting to send his colleagues to the next world. The emergency occurred at a meeting of the Keretskovsky village council in the Transcarpathian region, where issues of adopting the budget for the next year were discussed. MK found out the details.

A video of the incident appeared on the Internet. The footage shows a session of the village council in progress, with those present heatedly discussing something. At some point, a heavyset man enters the room. After standing at the door for a while, he takes two grenades out of his pockets, defiantly holding them in his hands, trying to say something, but this does not cause much attention from those present. Then the man throws grenades one after another on the floor towards the other deputies, two explosions are heard. The room fills with smoke, screams are heard, panic begins

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than twenty people were injured, many of them in serious condition. As for the bomber himself, it was first reported that he died as a result of the explosion, but later information appeared: the people's choice still survived, although he was in serious condition.

Little is known about the bomber himself. A 52-year-old man named Sergei lives in the village of Kushnitsa, he has a secondary specialized education. Batrin is listed in the local commission for law and order and allegedly has connections with the military, through whom he obtained the ammunition.

According to Ukrainian media, the reason for the heated discussion at the session was the “division of money”: discussion of the budget for 2024. Currently, doctors, special services and an investigation team are working at the scene. The final motives are being established.

Ukrainians' opinions about what happened were divided. The bomber even has defenders who believe that officials have stopped seeing anything other than money. People recognize that society is heavily overloaded with stress, corruption and permissiveness of the authorities. Such incidents will only become more frequent because people are going crazy. “After the start of hostilities, the population had a sea of guns and ammunition,” says Ukrainian Andrey. – The authorities have no control over this at all. In the video, he’s completely crazy, mentally tired, and what else will happen when soldiers return from the front lines to civilian society.”

“The main thing for the media is to write that he is a deputy,” Ukrainian resident Ilya writes on social networks, “ a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada and a deputy in the village council are a big difference. Ordinary people decide almost nothing; he could be a bus driver who comes once a session to sign papers. And he blew up people like himself.”
