Jordan Peterson: Britain will become 'Venezuela for 20 years' if Starmer wins next election

Britain will be “Venezuela for 20 years” if Labor wins the next general election, Dr Jordan Peterson has warned.

Talking to The Telegraph, a Canadian psychologist said Sir Keir Starmer's election is “very likely” “, but it would be a “disaster”.

In the wide-ranging interview, Dr. Peterson also said the belief that people can change gender represents “confusion at its finest” and criticized the “diversity is unity” ideology.

He praised Margaret. Thatcher as an “ethically worthy man” and a conservative with a “backbone” the likes of which have been in short supply in politics in recent years.

Dr. Peterson is a best-selling author, psychologist and professor emeritus at the University of Toronto with twenty years of experience teaching courses in academic institutions, including Harvard University.

Labor currently leads Labor by 17 per cent. Conservatives in polls. As Rishi Sunak struggles to unite a divided Tory party, there is speculation an election could be called as early as spring 2024.

Speaking from Toronto, Dr Peterson said: “You guys elect a Labor government and you You will be Venezuela for 20 years.”

“I'm afraid that if Britain votes [in] a Labor government. Rough waters await you if you were foolish enough to do so. But yes, it is very likely,” he said.

Venezuela was once the richest country in South America, but during decades of socialist rule it experienced a series of crises. Nicolas Maduro, its president, has been accused of tightening his grip on institutions such as the judiciary and the electoral commission, and most recently threatened to seize the oil-rich region controlled by neighboring Guyana.

“Not good. This is really not good.”

Dr. Peterson also criticized his compatriot Justin Trudeau.

He warns that the Canadian prime minister's ideology is deeply muddled.

Mr Trudeau is among leaders who “proclaim diversity as our unity”, Dr Peterson said, adding that there is an “endless multiplication of impulsive diversity… and there is no limit to how much fragmentation this will lead to.”

He said: “I think that because of our confusion about sex itself, we have actually reached maximum confusion. I don't think you can be more confused than this. Not good. This is really not good.”

Dr. Peterson added: “A culture that thinks diversity equals unity is also a culture that thinks a man can be a woman. You can't get any more confused.”

Mr. Trudeau proclaimed, “Diversity is Canada's strength” and said his country's strength is “not despite our differences, but because of them,” praising Canada's “commitment diversity in action.”

And as a strong advocate for gender inclusivity, last year the Prime Minister of Canada launched the country's first federal 2SLGBTQI+ An action plan that aims to create “a more inclusive future for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and other sexually and gender diverse people.”

In September, during an international tour designed to position Sir Keir as a statesman on the world stage, the Labor leader met with Mr. Trudeau. He is said to have sought election advice from a Canadian, his ideological ally on the progressive left.

    Let stupid ideas die

The Labor Party under Sir Keir has struggled to articulate a clear position on trans ideology and decide on the definition of woman, and gender-critical Labor MP Rosie Duffield has faced backlash from her own party over their views. Gender critical feminists believe in the existence of two biological sexes that cannot be changed.

In 2017, Dr. Peterson faced the wrath of his country's progressive left when he criticized the addition of “gender expression” and “gender identity.” » Canadian Human Rights Code. A free speech advocate said the amendment would make refusing to use gender-neutral pronouns a hate crime and dismissed it as “forced speech.”

Dr. Peterson said that in order to deal with fragmentation and With the confusion caused by these ideologies, it is crucial to recognize that “we are not cobbled together in a Petri dish, nor are we deer in the forest.”

He said: “People can let their stupid ideas die in their place. And because we can learn and transform, we are not limited by environmental limitations like other creatures and can always do more with less.

“The zero-sum Malthusian model [a model of population growth in which the rate of growth is proportional to the current population size] is not an appropriate model of human existence, and certainly not an appropriate model of human flourishing.”

Dr. Peterson believes that the correct model is human society is mutual cooperation and competition in a “hierarchy of social order oriented to the good.” And if you arranged this, then this is an auxiliary structure.”

“Take responsibility for yourself, take responsibility for your significant other and for your children. And then expand that responsibility outward, embracing it as much as you can as you become more experienced.”

Dr. Peterson blames the view that identity is individual rather than collective for many of the ills facing the modern world – climate panic, gender identity crises, family and social breakdown.

He said: “So , the idea that your personality is individual and that you are only who you say you are is not only absurd and counterproductive, it causes terrible anxiety and makes people endlessly lost.”

And so it is. “If you are looking for meaning in your life, take responsibility. There is no difference between voluntary responsibility and meaning. It is the same. And damn, that's a secret worth knowing.”

    “You're not free, you're lost.”

The psychologist refers to his own clinical work to support this.

“I’ve been making this case for years,” he said. “Young people come up to me all the time and say, you know, I'm really lost and I felt really bad about it. And I began to put things in order in my life and take responsibility. Now I'm married, I have a child, I have a good job, I make a lot of money, and you know, I don't have depression or anxiety, and the future looks good. And I think I can be a better person.”

In his bestselling book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, which has sold more than seven million copies worldwide, Dr. Peterson tries to motivate his readers through that the review is described as a “tough” but “idealistic” approach.

A married father of two grown children, Dr. Peterson is no stranger to tough love. He said, “If you are worried about the purpose of your life, you are a privileged child. Because you're so busy juggling the weight you choose to carry that you don't have time to think about anything else.”

In Peterson's philosophy, responsibility plays a key role even—or perhaps especially—in the context of freedom. He believes that freedom without responsibility is what the liberal West has adopted as an ideal, where any restrictive obligation is seen as an obstacle to “self-realization.”

“Well, what the hell is left to implement? ? What's left of you? You have no wife, you have no friends. You do not have kids. You don't care about your parents who don't have jobs. Oh, you're free now, right? You are not free, you are lost. Well, you're free when you're lost, I guess, because you can wander stupidly in any direction. But this is not the freedom you need.”

A deeply religious man who recently taught and published a 17-part seminar on the biblical book of Exodus, Dr. Peterson draws heavily on religious imagery to illustrate his point. “The vision of freedom in the Exodus narrative, which is the core narrative of rebellion against tyranny and slavery, is ordered freedom. This is responsible freedom. This is not anarchic or hedonistic freedom. This is the worship of the golden calf.”

    Thatcher had courage.

Dr. Peterson also spoke about how he came to admire Thatcher.

Recalling his left-wing politics in the early 1980s, he said: “You know, I didn't like Margaret Thatcher at all. I was a vegan. What the hell do you know when you're a kid? God, I didn't stop being a socialist at that moment.

“But it was only later that I realized how effective both Reagan and Thatcher were in relation to the Soviet Union.”

< p>He added: “And Thatcher. Well, she brought the English-speaking world back to the traditional path. She was an ethical person and earned her nickname [Iron Lady] very effectively. She had a spine. In recent years, in particular in the UK and Canada, we have seen a rise in the number of spineless Conservatives.”

Sir Keir recently found himself in political trouble with MPs from his party and the Scottish National Party after he wrote in an article for The Telegraph praised Thatcher for enacting “meaningful changes”. Facing criticism from his MPs, the Labor Party leader then accused Thatcher of committing “horrible acts” with which he “strongly disagrees”.

Dr. Peterson also dismisses fatalism about the environmental problems facing the world.

He said: “There is no hunger in the world [now] except for political reasons. There's a lot to do [here].

“We have hurricanes. This is a natural disaster. But what if you prepare? What are the preparation conditions? And the answer to this question is auxiliary social organization or distributed responsibilities. This also makes the system very stable. So part of the supporting vision is that decision-making should be passed down the hierarchy to the nearest possible level.”

Dr Peterson believes that universities cannot teach young people what they need, and do not inspire them to take responsibility.

Dr. Peterson, calling it a “kind of ridiculous ambition,” decided to challenge the monopoly of these institutions by creating his own online university.

The Peterson Academy aims to offer classes taught by academics from Ivy League and Oxbridge universities, with the simple slogan: “Learn to think, not what to think.”

He said: “We are trying to find people who have genuine knowledge and out of the way so they can pass it on.”

Teachers are afraid to say what they believe

At Peterson Academy, students will learn a “broad range of concepts” that are “tools for thinking, not lists of facts.” A good lecture not only tells you the facts, but also tells you how to implement it and why it is useful. And then you can negotiate better in the world, better navigate the world,” he added.

“And we don’t have a human resources department. Or a DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) consultant to spearhead it all.” Expected to open late January next year, Peterson Academy will offer courses for a modest annual fee of $480 (£378) ). These courses will be available to everyone and, according to conservative estimates, 30,000 students will take up places by the end of 2024.

Dr. Peterson clearly understands why established scientists would want to be part of this plan.

“Because institutions treat them terribly. They don't pay anything. And teachers are afraid to say what they believe,” he said.

“I’m going to bring them to Miami and I’m going to treat them so well that they’re going to be thrilled, I’m going to give them a better financial deal,” he continued. “My point is that you teach exactly what you like in any way you see fit. And if there's anything we can do to help you, let us know. And then we're going to get that out to everyone.”

He insisted he wasn't too concerned about the lack of formal accreditation for the academy's courses.

“Accreditation is only important for two reasons,” he said. “First of all, it's a pathway to graduate school, and that's going to be a challenge for us. But another way is employment. And all sorts of corporations are already publicly declaring that they no longer consider a university degree to be a badge of accreditation. So why the hell should I do this?

The Peterson Academy strives to truly “universalize” its courses, Dr. Peterson said, including using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“The other day I received a video of me giving a lecture in Spanish, in my own voice, with my intonation, and my lips perfectly matching my tongue. So we can take all our courses and translate them, they can already do it in twenty different languages.”
