WASHINGTON, Dec. 20The United States plans to send not only its own astronauts to the Moon, but also a foreigner by the end of the decade, the White House said on Wednesday.
US Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce this officially at a meeting of the National Space Council later today.
“”She will announce that, together with American astronauts, the United States will send one foreign astronaut to the surface of the Moon before the end of the decade,” – reported the White House in connection with Harris's speech.
The official goal of the US administration is for US astronauts to return to the Moon in 2025 on the Artemis 3 mission, although the government watchdog warns that the actual US return to the lunar surface may not occur until 2027.
The crew of the Artemis 3 mission has not yet been named, but NASA management previously stated that it would deliver not only an American, but also the first woman to the Moon. The United States is implementing the lunar program in cooperation with other countries. The so-called “Artemis Chords,” bilateral agreements on cooperation in this area, have already been signed with more than three dozen countries, including Canada, whose citizen, as NASA head Bill Nelson announced earlier this year, will be part of the crew of the Artemis mission -2″.
