Allan did not specify the cause of Priest’s death, however, according to the British newspaper Telegraph, the writer died of cancer — last summer he was diagnosed with small cell cancer.
According to the publication, Priest wrote 18 novels during his career. In addition to The Prestige, for which the writer received the James Tait Black Memorial Award, Priest's works include Fugue for a Darkening Island, An Overturned World and The Space Machine.
