MOSCOW, February 6Technologies are developing rapidly, so bioethics constantly faces new challenges, it is impossible to find all compromises, and on some issues ideal decisions may never be made, said the deputy dean of the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Moscow State University. Lomonosov in science, candidate of medical sciences, leading researcher at the National Medical Research Center of Endocrinology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, member of the presidium of the Russian Association for the Promotion of Science Maria Vorontsova.
«It cannot be said that all decisions have been made. On some issues, an ideal compromise may never be found. But the main thing is that the discussion continues,» Vorontsova told reporters following the conference «Bioethics and Genetics: Challenges XXI century» at the International Multimedia Press Center «Russia Today».
She noted that technology is developing rapidly, and new ethical questions constantly arise. Bioethics provides answers to the question of what rules these technologies can be used in, Vorontsova clarified.
According to her, specialists involved in bioethics are constantly in dialogue with practitioners and researchers in order to find the most acceptable standards within which to conduct research and accept their results.
Today, there are several acute challenges in bioethics, Vorontsova explained. So, for example, the question is to what extent does the genome being studied belong to a person or from what moment is it the object of ownership of his immediate environment.
«In addition, a number of issues concern reproductive health — IVF, neonatal screening. Where does the right of one partner to make a decision end and where does the right of the other partner begin? What prevails — the right of the woman who will carry the pregnancy, or the right of a man, who is also part of this process in family terms,” the specialist emphasized.
