The commander of the cosmonaut detachment beat Gennady Padalka in this
A new world record for the total time spent in space was set today, at 11.30 Moscow time, by the commander of the Russian cosmonaut detachment, Hero of Russia Oleg Kononenko.
Thus, Oleg Kononenko, the 102nd cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, surpassed Gennady Padalka in total flight hours with his 878 days 11 hours 30 minutes. At the same time, both made five flights into space.
Upon completion of the current expedition to the ISS, on September 23, 2024, Kononenko’s total flight time will be 1,110 days.
According to Valery Bogomolov, chief researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who did not live to see the new record for 9 months (he passed away in May last year), the total set of a record number of “space” days over several flights is primarily important for studying the possibilities of professional longevity cosmonauts.
According to Valery Vasilyevich, which he previously expressed to MK, flight organizers and society should be interested in the longevity of astronauts, because in order to teach them unique skills and carry out various programs, a lot of time is required and funds.
As for the level of accumulated radiation, it, according to Bogomolov, indeed accumulates during work in orbit, but is partially removed on Earth. From this point of view, many days and hours accumulated in six-month space watches are less dangerous than the 428 days that the Hero of the Soviet Union, Hero of Russia Valery Polyakov, who left us in 2022 at the age of 80, spent in orbit at one time.
