MURMANSK, February 8Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore will compare the drawings of the children of the Sami village of Lovozero, who lived 100 years ago, and modern children in order to draw conclusions about changes in the traditional way of life and economic activity, the Ministry of Culture of the Murmansk Region reported.
“»Drawings of small residents of Lovozero a hundred years ago and modern children will be compared by scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore. Research is being carried out as part of the Russian Academy of Sciences expedition “Clean Arctic — East — 77,” the message says.
As the ministry noted, scientists under the leadership of an expedition member, an employee of the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore Konstantin Kotkin, discovered in the archives several dozen drawings of Sami children who lived in Lovozero more than a century ago.
“The children, on instructions from the teacher, drew their surroundings in the process of traditional economic activities, and we plan to immerse modern Lovozero children in making drawings in a similar manner and theme,” said the researcher, whose words are quoted in the message.
Scientists not only plan to compare the drawings and comments on the drawings of great-great-grandfathers and their great-great-grandchildren, but also to interview the Sami as part of a comprehensive study carried out by members of the expedition “Clean Arctic — East — 77” in the territory inhabited by 19 peoples of the North from Murmansk to Uelen.
The mission of the expedition is to collect data on the current state of communities of indigenous peoples, changes in their traditional activities, the preservation of language and cultural heritage. In particular, as a result of the research, a number of scientific articles will be created that will shed light on the development of modern Kola Sami communities. In addition, after the completion of the expedition, it is planned to hold exhibitions of drawings by little Sami in Murmansk, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The expedition «Clean Arctic — Vostok — 77» started from Murmansk on August 15, 2023 and conducts scientific research throughout the Arctic within the framework of government assignments or grants from a number of institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This expedition carries out the tasks of reconnaissance of routes and conducting preliminary research for the RAS expedition cycle in 2024-2030. The expedition members are testing Russian equipment, communications equipment, equipment and insulation materials as part of import substitution programs for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Publications based on the results of the expedition should become the basis for a new wave of scientific exploration of the Russian Arctic and demonstration to the research community of new methods and technologies for conducting continental scientific expeditions.
