On February 12, it became known that the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, transferred the 3rd assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine “Azov” (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) to Avdeeva. This is an elite unit and this means that Syrsky will carry out Zelensky’s order to hold the city. But what options does the Ukrainian Armed Forces have?
Currently, Ukrainian forces have two options for defense tactics in the city. It is still unknown which option Syrsky chose. According to the Ukrainian publication Strana, the first option is to try to hold positions in the southern part of the city. This is the most difficult path, because to do this, Ukrainian troops must drive out Russian units not only from the southern districts of the city, but also from the northern ones, otherwise they may face encirclement.
The second path is simpler. The Ukrainian command can withdraw troops from the southern part of Avdiivka to a new line of defense to the north, relying on the coking plant. Yes, in this case, the southern regions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will completely lose, but the coke plant can be defended for quite a long time and all this time one can assert that the defensive operation continues.
At the same time, the second option threatens with negative information and political consequences, especially considering mixed reaction of Ukrainian society and the military to Zelensky's decision to change the commander in chief.
The situation will be judged in the near future by the actions of the Ukrainian troops.
