MOSCOW, 14 Feb.Researchers at Tomsk Polytechnic Institute have created an experimental box in which fire alarm and fire extinguishing systems will be tested. The complex based on neural networks has no analogues in the world, the press service of the university reported.
To create an experimental box, scientists from the Advanced Engineering School of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU ASH) conducted more than 2 thousand experiments on localizing and suppressing the combustion of typical construction and finishing materials, solid and liquid fuels, combustible and flammable substances, as well as specialized simulators of fire-hazardous powders.
Fire conditions were reproduced in the most common situations (careless handling of fire, violation of operating rules for heating devices, short circuit of electrical wiring, impact on materials local heating sources), as well as false activation of fire extinguishing systems.
The new project is focused on creating intelligent fire and process safety systems, said the head of the heat and mass transfer laboratory, professor of the Scientific and Educational Center I.N. Butakova TPU Pavel Strizhak.
Such systems are based on neural network algorithms for identifying emergency situations at an early stage, predicting consequences, and developing solutions to eliminate potential fires or other emergency situations.
“
“The activation of the system allows you to prevent emergency situations and minimize their consequences in less time and with minimal resources. To train the neural network, we conduct experiments in the laboratory, perform mathematical modeling, and tests on full-size complexes at remote test sites. All data is transferred to a single experimental database, on the basis of which the neural network is trained,” said Strizhak.

According to him, the experimental box is equipped with four specialized combustion chambers, in which the conditions of thermal decomposition, gasification, and combustion of materials of various categories and state of aggregation are reproduced.
The structure of the chambers is flexible, it can be reconfigured for different technological conditions. Each test furnace is equipped with modern thermal, smoke, gas analytical, video recording, thermal imaging, flame, chromatographic, optical and other sensors.
In addition, each chamber is equipped with fire extinguishing systems using advanced liquid, gas, foam, powder, gas hydrate technologies with feedback.
«There are no analogues to the development either in Russia or throughout the world. It will allow us to create an adaptive intelligent fire and technical safety system at enterprises, taking into account the capabilities and requirements for industrial safety. For adequate operation of the neural network system, a large database is required. We are actively working to expand it and plan to collect the required amount of data in two to three years of work. Test chambers specially created for this will significantly improve the sampling both quantitatively and qualitatively,” added Strizhak.
Currently the experimental box is at the commissioning stage. Research in the first test chamber has already begun, experiments in the rest will start at the end of March 2024.
