Rivian is preparing for the presentation of the R2 crossover: the first official teaser

It is expected that this “green” new product of the American startup will compete for buyers with Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.< /p>

Rivian Automotive is one of the American startups that intends to produce only electric vehicles. At the beginning of its journey, the company received development funds from Ford, Amazon and Cox Automotive. To organize the production of its models, Rivian bought the former Mitsubishi Motors plant, which is located in Normal (Illinois). The presentation of the first-born co-platforms — the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV — took place back in 2018, but they reached the assembly line only a few years later, in 2021.

Last week, the American company officially announced another model; the role of the new product will be played by the Rivian R2 crossover. It is known that there is less than a month left before the premiere of this electric car: the debut is scheduled for March 7. In the meantime, the manufacturer is teasing fans of the brand with the first official teaser, which, however, does not reveal much.

So, in the darkened frame, the silhouette of the front of the electric car is barely visible, as well as the LED head optics, which are designed in the same way as that of its “big brother” — the Rivian R1S SUV. So, you can see a wide luminous strip of running lights that runs across the entire width of the front part. The main blocks of oval-shaped headlights are integrated into it (the company calls them “stadium lights”, translated from English as “stadium lights”). Other exterior details will be revealed later.

Probably, the new product will borrow from its “relative” a number of other external elements, including rear lights, designed in the form of a wide strip crossing the trunk door and extending onto the rear wings. The interior of the Rivian R2 will most likely also be unified with the first-born of the brand. Official information about the crossover technique will appear later.

It is known that the new product will be more affordable than the R1S SUV already presented on the American market. According to preliminary data, the cost of Rivian R2 may vary from 40 to 60 thousand dollars. In the States, it is expected to compete for customers with a number of “green” models — Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Recall that last fall it became known that Rivian had launched its electric vans for free sale. Let us remember that initially they were exclusive to Amazon, but now the EDV (Electric Delivery Van) is available to a wide audience of buyers. The van is offered in two versions: the short Delivery 500 (overall length is 6312 mm, wheelbase — 4000 mm, cargo compartment volume — 13.79 cubic meters), as well as the long Delivery 700 (length — 7061 mm, wheelbase — 4750 mm , cargo compartment volume — 18.46 cubic meters).

As Kolesa.ru reported earlier, the main competitor of the Rivian Commercial Van on the market is the BrightDrop family of electric vans produced by General Motors: their mass production started the year before last.
