MOSCOW, February 19 Russia has advanced the furthest in the world in creating low-power nuclear power plants, said the general director of the state corporation Rosatom. Alexey Likhachev in an interview with Expert magazine.
«»Low power is now considered one of the promising areas in the global market. In addition to us, Argentina, Canada, China, the USA and South Korea are working on low-power projects in the world. There are more than 80 projects in total. But they have not yet been completed beyond the licensing stage. Russia has advanced the furthest along this path,» Likhachev noted.
Since Soviet times, the Bilibino NPP with low-power units has been operating in Chukotka, the world's only modern floating small nuclear power plant is operating in Chukotka, a low-power ground station is being built in Yakutia, a complex of four modernized floating power units for the Baimsk ore zone in Chukotka, recalled Likhachev.
«We also plan to build a land-based micro-power nuclear power plant (up to 10 MW) in Chukotka under the Shelf-M project to develop the Sovinoye gold deposit,» he added.
