MOSCOW, February 20 Researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) reported on their website that they had discovered the fastest-growing black hole in the history of observations, which also became the “brightest object” known in the Universe.
The Australian National University website says the black hole was discovered as part of a study conducted in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and the Sorbonne University in France. It is noted that it absorbs mass equivalent to the Sun every day, and its own mass exceeds the mass of the Sun by about 17 billion times.
«The fastest-growing black hole ever recorded, devouring the equivalent of one Sun every day, has been discovered by researchers from the Australian National University,» the report said.
Lead author of the study, Associate Professor at the Australian National University Christian Wolff, said that the intense radiation comes from the accretion disk around the black hole, which contains all the matter that “will inevitably be absorbed.”
«The incredible rate of growth (of a black hole — ed.) also means an enormous release of light and heat. It is the brightest object in the Universe known to science. It is 500 trillion times brighter than our Sun,» Wolf is quoted as saying on the website of the Australian national university.
According to University of Melbourne professor Rachel Webster, whose words are also quoted on the site, the light from this black hole took more than 12 billion years to reach Earth.
