Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin remains one of the most popular athletes not only in Russia, but also peace. The close attention of fans is attracted not only by his sporting successes, but also by his personal life. Sports tells about the life of Alexander and his family.
Personal life
Ovechkin did not immediately get along with his wife Anastasia Shubskaya. At the beginning of his career, the hockey player was credited with affairs with model Victoria Lopyreva, singer Zhanna Friske, and even Fergie from the super-popular band Black Eyed Peas at the turn of the 2000s and 1900s. In 2011, Ovechkin became close to tennis player Maria Kirilenko. The couple announced their engagement at the end of 2012, but things did not come to a wedding — in 2014, Ovechkin and Kirilenko separated.
Ovechkin met Shubskaya back in 2008. The daughter of actress Vera Glagoleva and Russian businessman Kirill Shubsky met the hockey player in the “Russia House” during the Olympic Games in Beijing.
“
"Then Sasha invited me to a slow dance. We talked and laughed. I remember well that he did not have, and still does not have, arrogance and star fever. “He’s a very simple guy,” Anastasia said in an interview with Hello magazine.
The romance between Ovechkin and Shubskaya began in 2014. The girl attended acting classes in the USA and stopped by the Washington game, where she again met her future husband. In March 2015, Ovechkin publicly spoke about his relationship with Shubskaya, and already in September he proposed to her.
The couple registered their marriage in 2016, and Ovechkin and Shubskaya celebrated their wedding in the summer of 2017 in Barvikha, near Moscow. Among those invited to the celebration are Ilya Kovalchuk, Vladimir Tarasenko, Denis Glushakov, Vladislav Tretyak, Roman Rotenberg. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally congratulated Ovechkin on his wedding by telephone. br>
Children
The first child of Ovechkin and Shubskaya was born in 2018 in the USA. The boy was named Sergei in honor of Ovechkin’s brother, who died in a car accident. The second son, Ilya, was born in 2020. The family spends most of the year in the USA, but in the summer Ovechkin and his family prefer to return to Russia. Ovechkin's eldest son has already followed in his father's footsteps and started playing hockey.
Ovechkin has long been one of the highest paid athletes in Russia. In 2023, he topped Forbes' ranking among all National Hockey League (NHL) players. According to the publication’s calculations, the Russian’s earnings for the 2023/24 season will be $17.5 million.
Ovechkin shares the lead in earnings with Colorado forward Nathan MacKinnon. At the club, the American earns more than Ovechkin — 16.5 million. But the Russian receives a significant portion of his income from advertising contracts. Brands Ovechkin collaborates with include Nike and watchmaker Hublot. Sponsorship contracts and business projects will bring the Washington leader about five million dollars.
In an interview with Forbes, the Washington captain invests 20% of his earnings in American bonds through a financial manager. It was also reported in the media that in 2018 the hockey player invested about ten million dollars in the fast food chain Papa John's in Russia.
Real Estate
Ovechkin owns real estate in both the USA and Russia. The Russian didn’t have much success with his first home after moving overseas. Life in the Washington suburb of Arlington was far from calm: Ovechkin was harassed by fans, and the noisy area prevented him from resting and recovering.
Ovechkin lived in Arlington until 2011. The Russian purchased the home for $1.6 million. Now this house with five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a sauna and a bar is rented for nine thousand dollars a month.
In 2011, Ovechkin swapped Arlington for a quiet metropolitan suburb. He purchased a luxurious mansion in McLean, which cost the Russian more than four million dollars. The house is decorated in the style of an old manor. Inside there are five bedrooms, two living rooms, seven bathrooms, a library, a cinema, a swimming pool and an atmosphere of luxury. The house is adjacent to an area of about half a hectare, where a barbecue area is located.
Ovechkin also did not forget about vacation housing in the States. In 2010, the hockey player purchased an apartment in Miami of 200 square meters with a gorgeous view of the ocean. According to media reports, Ovechkin spent about $1.5 million.
