MOSCOW, February 22< /strong> Two powerful flares were recorded on the Sun in less than 12 hours; the last time such a phenomenon was observed was seven years ago, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.
«Two flares of the highest magnitude X occurred today, February 22, 2024, on the Sun. The maximum of the first was recorded at night at 02:17 Moscow time. The second explosion occurred between 9 and 10 am and continues to develop as of noon Moscow time time,” the message says.
Since the beginning of 2024, there have already been five explosions of higher power on the Sun. Scientists reported that the increasing frequency of flares and the increase in their power indicates the Sun is gradually approaching the peak of activity, which could occur as early as mid-2024, although, according to some forecasts, it could shift to 2025.
Solar flares can cause magnetic storms on Earth, which, in turn, cause disruptions in the operation of energy systems, and also affect the migration routes of birds and animals. However, if the flare occurs at a significant distance from the Sun-Earth line, it has no effect on the planet.
