ROSTOV-ON-DON, February 28, Yulia NasulinaFirefighters extinguished a dry reed fire on the territory of the Astrakhan State Reserve, a representative of the reserve said.
On Tuesday evening, a natural fire spread to the territory of the Trekhizbinsky section of the reserve through the Tishkovsky Canal. The fire area was 2 hectares. By Wednesday morning, the fire had spread to 860 hectares and was contained during the day.
“As of 15.10 (14.10 Moscow time), a natural fire on the territory of the Trekhizbinsky section of the Astrakhan State Nature Reserve was extinguished by the forest fire brigades of the reserve,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
He clarified that the total area covered by fire in the reserve is approximately 860 hectares. The exact area and damage caused by the fire will be determined after a survey of the area.
The Astrakhan State Reserve was organized in 1919 in the Volga River delta for the conservation of waterfowl and semi-aquatic birds. The reserve is included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It is classified as a wetland of international importance. The area of the reserve is almost 68 thousand hectares. It consists of three sections located far from each other — Damchiksky, Trekhizbinsky and Obzhorovsky.
