The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry protested to the Charge d'Affaires of Russia
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expressed a protest to Charge d'Affaires of Russia Alexander Elkin. The basis was his position on the reasons for the state of relations between the countries, which he expressed in a conversation with journalists.
The message on the department’s website clarifies that the interview was published on the website of the RIA Novosti agency on February 27 of this year.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry also stated that Elkin “was expressed a protest,” not only because of allegedly false statements about the reasons for the state of relations between Russia and Lithuania, but also “the conditions of Kaliningrad transit and the rights of Russian citizens.”
Recall that the Lithuanian Ambassador to Sweden and former Foreign Minister of the Baltic Republic Linas Linkevicius threatened to “neutralize” Kaliningrad against the backdrop of Sweden's accession to NATO. He stated that “the Baltic Sea has become internal to the North Atlantic Alliance.”
The situation was commented on by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kremlin. Thus, according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, the advance of the North Atlantic Alliance towards the borders of Russia and the hostile rhetoric of NATO countries serve as a reason for Russia to take additional measures to ensure security.
Russian Foreign Ministry official representative Maria Zakharova, in her own words turn, stated that the Lithuanian ambassador is not authorized to make such statements.
