MOSCOW, March 3 Wikipedia may be blocked in Russia under a new law banning the popularization of VPNs, wrote Anton Gorelkin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, in Telegram.
“Colleagues from Runiversalis are absolutely right to draw attention to the existence of an entire wiki article, which not only describes ways to bypass blocking, but also strongly recommends that users use them,” he noted.
He indicated that the content of this material fully complies with the criteria for blocking recently announced by Roskomnadzor.
According to the parliamentarian, the regulator still has a number of claims, many of which have already been adjudicated, and there are legal grounds for blocking Wikipedia.
At the same time, as Gorelkin emphasized, it is important that this does not cause “severe discomfort” among users.
But he noted that virtually all the valuable information from the resource has already been duplicated, brought into compliance with encyclopedic standards, and posted on the Russian segment of the Internet: on the portal «BRE», «Ruviki» and «Runiversalis».
Now all that remains is to implement a technical solution so that following a link to a Wikipedia article the user is prompted to open its secure version on one of the Russian analogues, indicated deputy.
Gorelkin said that such an algorithm is already being developed by experts from the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT).
Earlier, Roskomnadzor reported that from March 1, 2024, a ban on the popularization of VPNs will come into force in Russia services that provide access to prohibited sites.
