The Netherlands will demand the extradition of Moscow Spartak football player Quincy Promes following the arrest of an athlete in Dubai is news that stirred up the sports agenda on a calm Wednesday evening. The Sport correspondent talks about the last days of the Russian champion of the 2016/17 season in freedom, draws an analogy with another resonant story named after Alexander Kokorin and Pavel Mamaev, and also discusses how the relationship of the leader of the “red-whites” with the club may develop in the future.
On the sidelines of the Gazprom Arena during the Zenit — Spartak match, representatives of the Moscow club studiously avoided any comments related to the detention of Quincy Promes in the UAE. It seems that they themselves did not know everything. The version with the arrest due to fleeing the scene of an accident was accepted as a working one, and the release of the Spartak forward from custody and subsequent attendance at the party corresponded to it. Only everything turned out to be much worse for those who believed in Quincy’s innocence in the attack on a relative and his non-involvement in the drug business, for which he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in his native Netherlands.
The Amsterdam District Prosecutor's Office on its own The official website published the following message: “Following constructive cooperation between the authorities of the UAE and the Netherlands, a 32-year-old man living in Moscow was arrested in Dubai. The arrest was made on the basis of a “red notice” issued by the Netherlands. The man’s extradition will be demanded.”

We are, of course, talking about Promes. After being released after being detained at Dubai airport, Quincy lived in a luxury hotel with his girlfriend and apparently did not appreciate the degree of danger looming over him. After all, a “red notice” is a signal to law enforcement agencies around the world to find and detain a person for his extradition. There is a corresponding agreement between the UAE and the Netherlands.
Last year, Spartak played it safe and did not take Promes to the training camp. The Dutchman trained quite calmly in Moscow and approached the restart of the championship in good shape. It is unclear why they have now decided that Quincy, who has the status of a tax resident of the UAE, is not in danger.
Promes himself, while in the UAE awaiting trial, recorded a music track in which he said: “People say that they are on my side. I don’t see them anymore, because the judge gave me nine years. But I won’t shed a tear because for this crap, because I live without fear.» Quite in the style of the reckless Spartak forward, who believes that his ability to score goals will write off all his sins.
Spartak fans and club veterans, after the first reports of Promes’ detention in the UAE, began a campaign to protect him. The motto was the words that US President Franklin Roosevelt allegedly said about the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Samosa: “He’s a son of a bitch, of course, but he’s our son of a bitch.” Perhaps the latest information will still encourage the leaders of the “people's team” to think about terminating the contract. This, by the way, can help Promes himself. In the Netherlands, many are convinced that such a severe punishment was also imposed because Quincy earns a lot of money in Moscow. Although, as evidenced by publications in Dutch newspapers, the collected evidence base leaves no doubt about Promes’ guilt.
We condemned Alexander Kokorin and Pavel Mamaev who committed hooligan acts, but for some reason we show strange leniency towards the Dutch legionnaire Promes. There were even calls to grant the prisoner Russian citizenship. This is impossible under our legislation. A certificate of no criminal record is required from the state whose citizen the potential Russian was.
Be that as it may, Spartak will have to do without Promes for a long time. The club can only hope for a favorable outcome. Perhaps for the “red-whites”, who already have enough problems, this is for the better. After all, with the same “Zenith” they managed to play without Quincy on equal terms.
