    Dostoevsky in the podcast

The Bronnaya Theater reimagined Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel “The Humiliated and the Insulted.” The director of the play “Proud” Kirill Vytoptov chose an unusual podcast format: the main character talks about himself as if he lived in the 19th century. In this way, we managed to carefully modernize the novel.

“When I take on the production of classical literature, it is always important for me to understand how it will relate to today. I did not want to transfer the action of the novel “Humiliated and Insulted” to modern times, but it also seemed strange to offer the viewer historical reality in its pure form. face of a young writer. This is how the idea of a plot frame arose in the form of a literary podcast, where a modern writer tells the hosts about the idea of moving the events of his life to the 19th century. Such a hoax allowed us to connect two different times together and add a game element to the action, because the heroes of the novel periodically also become guests of the podcast to voice thoughts and feelings that are important to them,” said Vytoptov.

“Lady with Camellias” at the Moscow Art Theater named after Gorky

The Mikhailovsky Theater brought from St. Petersburg to Moscow the premiere of the opera “The Lady with the Camellias” directed by Vladimir Kekhman. The screenings will take place on the stage of the Gorky Moscow Art Theater on March 26 and 27.

This is a new version of the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas “The Lady of the Camellias” and Verdi’s opera “La Traviata”.

The action of the play is moved to the beginning of the twentieth century – an era of great upheavals and great art. Now this is the life story of a Russian ballerina who is forced to choose between the stage and feelings. The events of 1917 force Margarita to leave St. Petersburg. Thanks to an influential patron, Baron Dufol, the girl needs nothing to emigrate to Italy. However, after leaving Russia, the dancer discovers that the luxurious villa in Capri is more like a golden cage; the years pass, and with them strength and talent flow away.
The performance uses a synthesis of genres – drama, opera, ballet. This is the debut of the artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater and the general director of the Gorky Moscow Art Theater as an opera director.

Bold cabaret and tales of Saltykov-Shchedrin

At the Mossovet Theatre, on the “Under the Roof” stage, screenings of “The Viper Cabaret,” the directorial debut of artist Anna Galinova based on the story “The Viper” by Alexei Tolstoy, will start in March. Viewers will see the drama in the atmosphere of a 1920s cabaret with shooting and live music. And in April, director and artistic director of the theater Evgeniy Marcelli will present his vision of Moliere's legendary comedy “Tartuffe”.

On April 20 and 21, the Satire Theater will host the premiere screenings of the play “A Boy's Dreams. Tales of Shchedrin.” Director Evgeny Zakirov, using the stories of Saltykov-Shchedrin “The Wild Landowner”, “The Wise Minnow”, “The Faithful Trezor”, will talk about the moral problems of man. The main character will gradually understand the complex world of adults, and all this will happen in warm, pastoral settings with soft light, fantastic images and masks.

Anniversary Pushkin and the new “Hamlet”< /h3>The Vakhtangov Theater celebrated the holiday with the premiere of “Pushkin’s Stories” – this year Russia celebrates the 225th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Sergeevich. The author of the production, the theater's chief director Anatoly Shuliev, said that the play is dedicated to the intricacies of fate.

“Pushkin is very meaningful, mysterious. And you want to unravel these secrets. There is a lot hidden behind the simple facade. We will talk about time, and the key message of the whole story is the idea that death is always followed by a new life and this cycle is eternal,” Shuliev noted.

A re-imagining of William Shakespeare's Hamlet will be shown at the Yermolova Theater in April. All that remains of the original characters in the production are their names and a few references to the classics. Director Evgeny Serzin called for treating the performance as an independent work. “Hamlet” is also interesting because it was created by a team of young artists as part of a creative experiment called “PROJECT [1.5]”. Based on the results of the open call, the organizers provide the team with one and a half million rubles, one and a half months and the space of the Main Stage to bring their idea to life. The play “Medea” directed by Vasilios Samourkas was made according to the same principle. Its premiere is also scheduled for April.

    Youth disaster and rural prose

On the Small Stage of the Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov, they remembered Knut Hamsun’s drama “Hunger” – once his plays were regularly in the repertoire. The play by Golden Mask nominee Elizaveta Bondar turned out to be youthful and catastrophic: the main character, an unclaimed writer, is forced to starve due to extreme poverty. Being in a borderline emotional state, he tries to fill the inner emptiness with fantasies. His role was played by the artist of the Vakhtangov Theater Sergei Volkov.

“No one can help the hero, even those who try can no longer pull him out. And he plunges deeper and deeper into this funnel. It seems to me that this is about the state of a person when he begins to lose contact with the outside world and goes into the inner world. An endless monologue that eats him up,” Volkov noted at a press conference.

And on the Small Stage of the Theater of Nations, Murat Abulkatinov staged a simple and emotional story of first feelings from Vasily Aksenov’s novel “Ten Visits to My Beloved.” In front of the audience, high school student Oleg will try to court a girl Tanya from a neighboring village. While working on the project, the director, together with the actors, visited the writer’s native place – the village of Yalan, Krasnoyarsk Territory. On stage they tried to recreate the poetry of those places where the taiga stretches for thousands of kilometers.
On the main stage of the theater, on May 20 and 21, the premiere of the play based on one of the most famous novels by Ivan Turgenev, “Fathers and Sons,” was planned. Director: Semyon Serzin.

    “Slaves” in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg at the Bolshoi Drama Theater on March 14 and 15, the premiere of Andrei Moguchy’s play based on the play “Slaves” by Pyotr Gnedich took place.

It tells about the life of a noble family from the time of Paul I. The role of the head of the family, a princess in a wheelchair, was once played by outstanding actress Elena Gogoleva on the stage of the Maly Theater. In Moguchy's production she is played by Marina Ignatova. The performance lasts more than four hours, the action is not interrupted even during intermissions. Viewers of the first screenings noted the scale of the production and unusual artistic solutions – the stage design is constantly changing, creating the effect of a movie screening.

Next premiere screenings – April 26-28.
