MOSCOW, April 20 Leading Chinese swimmers, including Zhang Yufei, Wang Shun and Qin Haiyang were admitted to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, despite positive results of doping tests, reported Nick Butler, a journalist for the German television channel ARD, on his account on the social network X.
As a result of the ARD investigation, which lasted many months, It turned out that in January 2021, 23 Chinese swimmers passed positive doping tests, which showed the presence of the banned drug trimetazidine in their bodies. It was for this drug that Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva was disqualified.
A few months later, an internal investigation revealed that traces of the drug were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the athletes stayed during the competition. The International Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted this explanation and supported the Chinese side's decision not to conduct additional testing or issue provisional suspensions for athletes who were able to compete at the Olympics.
The Tokyo Games, postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19, were held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The Chinese swimming team won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
