MOSCOW, April 27 Finnish military and law enforcement officers have begun using jamming devices to combat UAVs due to fears of their use for espionage purposes, the public service reported on Saturday broadcaster Yle.
“Finnish authorities have begun using jamming systems to shoot down drones flying in prohibited areas. According to Yle, jamming devices are used by the Defense Forces, police and rescue services,” the material notes.
Small drones are becoming increasingly common in Finland, used for photography but can also be used for information gathering and espionage, the report said. However, in Finland it is prohibited to fly drones near critical infrastructure facilities, such as nuclear power plants and other energy facilities, as well as in areas where the Defense Forces are located.
According to Chief Inspector of Police Ves Pihajoki, flight restrictions in no-fly zones are violated by unmanned aerial vehicles “constantly and regularly”.
Air Force Commander Juha-Pekka Keränen told Yle that the Defense Forces use passive jamming systems. This equipment disables the drone's control signal, causing it to crash or crash-land. The system also determines the location of the person who launched the drone.
