A councilor named Karl Marks has been elected for the Labor Party in Stockport.
The politician, whose full name is Karl Peter Marks Wardlaw, has been chosen to represent the areas of Brinnington and Stockport Central in Thursday's local elections.
Commander Wardlaw, who shares at least part of his name with the philosopher and architect of communism, won a landslide victory with 1,069 votes — 61 percent of the vote.
He is among dozens of successful Labor local candidates across the country, although Stockport council still had no overall control — the Lib Dems won the majority of seats.
Cllr Wardlaw had more success as a Labor Party candidate. than from the Green Party, his former party. In 2019, he stood as a councilor for the Greens and came second to then Labor candidate Kerry Waters, with just 13 per cent of the vote.
He was photographed with Navendu Mishra, the local MP, for both the re-election and the re-election of Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Cmdr. Wardlaw said that since becoming a councilor in May last year he had «reported numerous fly-tipping incidents, potholes and represented residents on a range of other issues.»
In Stockport overall, Labor lost two seats and the Lib Dems gained two, while the number of independent and Green councilors remained unchanged.
Election of Cllr Wardlaw, who is a member of the Unite trade union, Labor also won additional parliamentary seats election in Blackpool South, in which Sir Keir Starmer, the Labor leader, called the victory «seismic».
