MOSCOW, May 5. The Sun experienced a second powerful flare of the day, reported the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“There is a second X flare on the Sun in a day. The explosion was registered in the same area of the Sun as the previous flare. The maximum was recorded at 14:54 Moscow time. This means that only about six hours passed between the two events,” the scientists specified.
It is noted that mass ejection in this case is almost completely excluded. The Sun could not accumulate matter again in such a short time that had passed since the first explosion, scientists explained. According to preliminary data, both explosions did not have an additional radiation component in the form of energetic protons, so satellite constellations are not at risk.
The geomagnetic consequences of the events of May 5 may not appear until Wednesday, and it is still absolutely unclear in what form this will happen.
«The magnetic storms expected on Monday and Tuesday have nothing to do with what is happening right now on the Sun and are caused by previous processes. The forecast for Wednesday, as well as a general understanding of the possible impact of current events on the planet, are currently missing «The observational data is being analyzed,» the scientists added.
Today the laboratory reported that on the morning of May 5, the second flare of the highest grade X occurred in two days. It was preceded by more than 20 flares, including ten of the average level M. Three of them (levels M9.1, M8.4 and M9.0) lacked only 10-20% of power to reach the highest score X.
