MOSCOW, May 6.< /strong> One of the largest flares over the past 10 years occurred on the Sun, said Sergei Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
«One of the largest flares of the last decade occurred on the Sun less than half an hour ago. A sharp increase in X-ray fluxes in Earth's orbit is reported. The event was also identified visually by space telescopes. The power is tentatively estimated as X4.5,» Bogachev said.
< br />He noted that since May 2014, only four larger explosions have been recorded on the Sun.
Bogachev explained that the outbreak was the result of the largest surge in solar activity in this cycle. According to scientists, it is still ongoing.
«Currently, the planet is in a cloud of solar plasma. Magnetic storms are occurring, caused by earlier events. The consequences for the Earth from the current explosion will be clear within a few hours,» the scientist added.
