MOSCOW, May 8. The French Embassy in Russia honored the memory of the world famous French writer Romain Gary, who lived in Moscow, who was born on May 8, 1914 in the Russian Empire.

“On this day, May 8, 1914, 110 years ago, Romain Gary, one of the most popular French writers of the twentieth century, was born,” the diplomatic mission said in a message on its telegram channel.
«Pilot, diplomat, hero of the Second World War, novelist and great mystifier, he is the only writer to be awarded the famous Prix Goncourt twice: first in 1956 as Romain Gary, second in 1975 as Emile Azhar,» — noted at the embassy.
The French diplomatic mission recalled that the writer’s name at birth was Roman Katsev, and according to archival data, as a child, from 1915 to 1921, he lived in Moscow at 6 Klimentovsky Lane, where in 2018 year, a memorial plaque was unveiled.
In honor of the opening of the memorial plaque, the French Institute created an interactive platform “on which you can find interviews with Russian and French figures from the world of diplomacy, literature, journalism, theater, videos and archival documents, as well as virtually see the memorial plaque and the house in which Romain Gary lived.»
