MOSCOW, May 10.A new type of scammers has appeared on Telegram — now the attackers pose as technical support and contact the victim supposedly to cancel the deletion of her account; they also use investor channels, voting links and bots to make money as cover, Roskoshestvo said.
It is noted that the problem of hacking accounts in this messenger is becoming more and more urgent every year. For example, one of Roskachestvo’s studies showed that 5% of respondents had ever been hacked on Telegram. When considering this figure in the context of the total number of its users in Russia, which is 85 million, it turns out that more than 4 million users could face a similar threat, experts emphasized.
“Recently, specialists at the Center for Digital Expertise of Roskachestvo have received a large number of complaints about a new type of fraud on Telegram: the potential victim is informed that they have received a request to delete an account, and is offered, if necessary, to cancel the procedure. To do this, the person is recommended to go to a phishing site with an interface similar to Telegram, enter the phone number and security code. Having received the necessary data, the attackers have access to the account, correspondence and channel management,” the organization explained.
However, Telegram does not collect deletion requests. In addition, Roskachestvo advises to beware of “experts” in the field of investments, cryptocurrencies and “profitable investments” who contact directly or advertise their services in Telegram channels.
“You shouldn’t believe promises of easy money or buy the status of a qualified investor. In most cases, such offers are fraudulent. You should be wary if the “investor” is poorly versed in the topic, comments are always closed under his publications, and after a series of “successful” transactions the scammer intrusively invites you to transfer your own account for temporary use in order to “visually show an example of earnings,” they explained
.At the same time, it turned out to be a widespread scam with “bots for making money”, where a large sum is promised instantly for registration or participation in some program, as well as a scheme in which attackers send messages to users asking them to support their child or friend in a competition and vote for his work on the competition website.
In this regard, the organization reminded about the security rules: you should use complex passwords, enable two-factor authentication, do not neglect antivirus, be careful when following links from Telegram, check the URL in the address bar, and do not share personal data on suspicious websites that were visited from the messenger, and never send your payment information to anyone.
