From Zhirinovsky's entourage. Whom Mishustin nominated for the post of Minister of Sports

Mikhail Mishustin proposed a governor for the post of Minister of Sports of Russia Khabarovsk Territory Mikhail Degtyarev. He will replace Oleg Matytsin, who has headed the department since 2020. What do you need to know about a person who worked with Zhirinovsky for many years?
Against the financing of professional sports Degtyarev’s entire life and career is connected with sports. Born into a family of doctors, the future functionary chose fencing, in which he reached great heights. He is a master of sports, multiple champion of Samara and the Samara region, winner of all-Russian and international fencing competitions.

After several years of working in various positions in the Samara region, Degtyarev sat in the State Duma from 2011 to 2020 from the LDPR; he was always close to Zhirinovsky. In 2016, he was appointed chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs.

was a deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia of the VI and VII convocations. In the 7th convocation he became chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs. Degtyarev has repeatedly spoken out harshly and fundamentally on topics relevant to the sports field. For example, in 2020, he stated that confidence in the information provided by the former head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory, Grigory Rodchenkov, who launched the entire sanction mechanism for domestic sports, is gradually beginning to dry up even among the Western press.
“”The fact that even the Western press now doubts the authenticity of the signatures speaks volumes. Perhaps the day is not far off when trust in the only alleged witness – the fugitive informant Rodchenkov – will begin to dry up. Victory in court proceedings will strengthen our position, including including in the appellate courts,” the functionary said then.
Degtyarev also recognized the need for the state to withdraw from financing professional sports, focusing efforts on mass and children’s and youth sports: “Still, in professional sports there are alternative types of income, there are sponsors , interested people, there is doping, which we as a state are fighting.”

A hit on Zadorov and a goal for “Amur” Degtyarev did not shy away from the theme of patriotism. Thus, he harshly criticized National Hockey League (NHL) player Nikita Zadorov, who in 2020 said that he “does not like what is happening in Russia now” and that his family “would be better here.”

“This is one example of the free spirits that currently exist in the transfer market in Russia,” said Degtyarev. — A young hockey player, a graduate of CSKA, who showed himself in the “Red Army,” now plays in the NHL and thus “assesses the situation” at home. What did Zadorov do in Russia until he was 17 years old, if “something incomprehensible is happening” in Russia? I went to school for free, learned to play hockey, breathed Russian air, skated on Russian ice.”

By the way, hockey has long been on Degtyarev’s list of favorite sports. Back in 2018, he joined the board of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF), and after starting work as governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, he headed the supervisory board of the hockey Amur. Already in December 2021, Degtyarev set Amur the task of winning the Gagarin Cup by 2026. It is still far from this, but the club is already taking the first and important steps, and reaching the playoffs of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) confirms this.

Russian sports have been under sanctions for more than two years, and Degtyarev’s department falls on the difficult task of maintaining a constructive dialogue with international actors, developing our own formats of competitions and tournaments, as well as the full return of our athletes to world tournaments.
