SEVERSK (Tomsk region), May 23India can join the Breakthrough project carried out by Rosatom, within the framework of which nuclear energy technologies of the future are being put into practice, said the general director of the state corporation Alexey Likhachev.
As part of the strategic industry project «Breakthrough», Rosatom is building an experimental demonstration energy complex (ODEC) in Seversk, Tomsk Region, based on an innovative fast neutron reactor unit with lead coolant BREST-OD-300 with a capacity of 300 MW. The complex will include a station plant that closes the nuclear fuel cycle, which includes a module for processing irradiated nuclear fuel from the BREST reactor and a module for the production of such nuclear fuel.
< br />“We are the first in the world to implement this project not in theory, not in 3D models, but directly on the ground here in Seversk,” Likhachev told reporters.
«And I am almost sure that Indian partners in one form or another will join this work, this project. It is important for us to create certain competencies here in Seversk, then scale up, primarily in the Russian Federation. And almost simultaneously with our closest strategic partners, we are negotiating this,” he added.
The Breakthrough project is aimed at creating a new technological platform for the nuclear industry with a closed nuclear fuel cycle. The new one should ensure the leadership of Russian technologies in the global nuclear energy industry. And for the first time in the world, ODEC must demonstrate the sustainable operation of the full complex of facilities providing the CNFC, embodying a new quality of nuclear generation of the future — unprecedentedly safe, environmentally friendly, resource-saving and competitive.
The on-site option for organizing the fuel cycle allows you to test the technologies of the so-called “short fuel cycle” in the shortest possible time within one site.
