This week I will recommend a movie that I liked. It wasn't something I normally see, but I enjoyed it so much that I want to warn you in case you miss it too. Like me, you can simply ignore this kind of entertainment.
This is a snuff film.
This is not a snuff film. But it's a genre I've always looked for with a little more enthusiasm: an action movie full of car chases, stolen guns, people rolling under sliding doorways firing guns, and a main actor who usually plays characters from Marvel comics.
Ghost, it's called. You'll find it on Apple TV+ in a very modern way, where despite its big stars and big bang, it was released for streaming and not cinema. It only came out last week, but it already has a Wikipedia page that lists it as having received bad reviews. I read a few, and sure enough, found a torrent of scathing condescension.
Critics don't count. A bunch of intellectual snobs, most of them, who are introduced to their chosen culture in abnormal, lonely, pompous circumstances and react in atypical ways. On New Year's Day, I wrote about film critics who use adjectives like «slow» and «dark» as compliments (I was especially grumpy when I recently saw a sequel to «Railroad Kids» in which two-thirds of the railroad kids are dead). ), and I asked, «Wouldn't it be great if joy returned to the movies in 2023?»Chris Evans and Ana de Armas in Ghosted Credit: Apple
It's not really a movie unless you have one of those giant screens, but it's a big budget action movie full of the joy I'm talking about.< /p>
Should I trust me, not professionals? It's hard to say, these things are so subjective. Here are some parameters to help you get your bearings: I think Back to the Future is the greatest movie of all time. I always cry over Rocky 2. The only film I gave up halfway through was The Books of Prospero, an avant-garde interpretation of The Tempest in which (I found out too late, after paying) John Gielgud plays not only Prospero, but everyone other roles. I giggled throughout George Clooney's very serious thriller The American, especially the sex scenes. I think Mama Mia! «Here We Go Again» is grossly underrated. I smoked a cigarette at the Oxford Odeon during the closing credits of Schindler's List because I was so traumatized by its heart-rending magnificence, but when a pushy man hurried down the aisle to chastise me, I regained enough composure to shout, «Who's a Nazi now? ?
I'm in love with John Cusack, Paul Rudd and Drew Barrymore. I could literally quote Some Like It Hot from «Okay Charlie, is this a joint?» to «No one's perfect.» In 1993, I went with my friend Tim to see the Tina Turner biopic What's It Got to Do with Love at lunchtime in Soho, and there was no one in the theater except us and the old prep principal Tim, who was sitting alone in the third row; the conversation after that was more awkward than after Schindler's List.
I don't know if any of this helps. But that's my summary, and I found Ghosted to be funny, touching, fantastically fast-paced, and downright addictive. It all starts out as a romantic comedy — a really charming, sweet romcom with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas having the perfect 24-hour date that leads to a really sexy love scene (and remember, I'm the type to giggle watching George Clooney, do it) But then she stops responding to his messages (hence the name of the film in the city dictionary) and he tracks her down to London, where her secret life in the CIA is revealed and a super-fast action movie begins.
It's all a gripping, witty, romantic epic that grabs you without taking itself seriously, and if its director Dexter Fletcher doesn't move on to making Bond films, then… well, then someone really wants them to be like Quantum. mercy.» .
I suppose there's some serious meaning to this somewhere, having to do with how well you've ever known your partner. But the hackneyed closing question in high culture is, «Do we even know other people?» and I think most married people would say, «Oh my God, yes.» a curate and attorney from Suffolk said: “Anyone can be a spy. You don't know that I'm not a spy.»
And Charlie said, «I'm really a spy.»
Still, everyone loves the secret life fantasy. For a long time after watching The Long Kiss Goodnight, I hoped that I myself was an amnesiac killer. You can't prove it's wrong.
On Sunday at 3:00 pm, the notorious government alert went off on my phone, but not on my husband's. I briefly wondered if the government wanted him dead. In many ways, he has all the traditional mannerisms of a spy. But he's definitely not alone. (Unlike the members of Only Connect. They are all like that.)
Speaking of Only Connect, I was happy to see that the main character in Ghosted is beta, asthmatic, and too needy for women. It's so refreshing, especially from an actor who usually plays Captain America.
Now I'll stop delirious. You can tell me I'm wrong, but try. Critics don't know. You must listen to me because I am not alone. And note: the Oxford Odeon banned smoking just three days before the release of Schindler's List.
