Most major supermarkets do not yet have a dedicated tab in their online stores to direct shoppers to their entire UK range. Sainsbury's has a «British Foods» tab on its fruit and vegetable menu, and Waitrose has «fine British fruits and vegetables» and «British regional cheeses» sections. Ocado has a «Best of Britain» page.
Ms Villiers said: “In the UK we produce some of the best food in the world. Buying British food helps our farmers, cuts the carbon footprint of food miles and boosts our rural economy.»
Minette Butters, president of the National Farmers Union (NFU), said it was 'pleasant' to see how The MPs backed the 'Buy British Products' initiative because 'we have been asking retailers to commit to labeling British products for a number of years.
She said the political and public support for British industry was «more important and valuable than ever». Earlier this year, an NFU survey found that farmer confidence was at its lowest since the start of the pandemic, in part due to skyrocketing production costs.
Dr Evans said: “Farmers in my community say the best it's easy to support them: buy British products. So I wanted to get this across to the nation as we know the public wants to play its part.”
Sainsbury's spokesperson said: “Our UK products are mentioned in a number of ways, including category filters. and flags on products. We are constantly adapting our website to reflect the way our customers shop online and help them find the products they need.»
An Ocado spokesperson said, «As an online retailer, we can be truly informed The one we share is flexible and specific, so when fresh food is in season, we will also add «British» to the name of the product on the site.»
