Daimler Truck presented the long-awaited serial long-range electric tractor of the Mercedes-Benz brand, but its production will begin only at the end of 2024.
At the beginning of last year, the Daimler AG concern was divided into two companies — Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Daimler Truck AG, the latter includes the Mercedes-Benz Trucks cargo division, which is gradually expanding the electric line of the Actros family. The already launched eActros 300 and eActros 400 will soon be joined by the longest-range tractor, the eActros 600, whose development lasted more than eight years and is finally completed. Today the production eActros 600 was presented; it will be produced in the same place as the diesel Actros — at the Mercedes-Benz Trucks head plant in Wörth am Rhein (Germany). Preparing for production will take more than a year, but accepting orders for the eActros 600 will begin this year.

The price of the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 has not yet been announced; it is only known that the electric tractor will cost approximately two and a half times more than a diesel tractor of the same class, while the company claims that it can be repaid in five years and 600,000 km, subject to operation in Europe, where the authorities of individual countries subsidize low electricity tariffs for trucks.
The declared gross weight of the road train with the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 at the head is 44 tons, the load capacity is 22 tons. The manufacturer does not indicate how much the 800-volt lithium-iron-phosphate battery with Chinese CATL cells weighs. The battery consists of three modules with a capacity of 207 kWh, the total capacity is 621 kWh, the range on one charge is 500 km. For comparison, let's say that the Nikola Tre BEV electric tractor with a battery capacity of 733 kWh can travel 530 km on one charge, Tesla Semi with a battery capacity of about 900 kWh — more than 800 km.

Any battery degrades and loses capacity over time: Mercedes-Benz Trucks claims that after 1.2 million km the remaining battery capacity will be more than 80% of the nominal. The maximum charging power is 400 kW, and you can replenish the charge from 20 to 80% in about 45 minutes; the full charging time is not specified. In the future, Mercedes-Benz Trucks plans to increase the maximum charging power to 1 MW. At the lowest charging power of 22 kW, fully charging the battery will take approximately one and a half days…

The power plant of the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 consists of a 4-speed gearbox and two electric motors on the rear axle, their maximum combined power is 600 kW (816 hp), continuous power is 400 kW (544 hp). The electric motors have five recuperation modes, the maximum regenerative power allows you to control the speed of the truck with one pedal, that is, without using the brake pedal. Smart cruise control will also brake or accelerate the car in advance, based on navigation data, and allow you to use energy more efficiently.

The cabin of the eActros 600 is essentially the same as that of the diesel Actros, but with an original highly efficient aerodynamic tail, allowing for additional kilometers of range on a single charge. Cameras are used instead of rear view mirrors. The three-axle semi-trailer in the photographs has a sloping top and therefore looks a little hunchbacked.
Dump trucks based on the eActros 600 will also be offered, that is, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is counting on good sales not only in logistics, but also in the construction sector.
