Today it became known that the Olympic champion in figure skating Elena Ilinykh gave birth to her third child. She and her fiancé, ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, had a son. they tell how one of the most beautiful figure skaters in history found herself in motherhood.
Elena Ilinykh performed in ice dancing and was a star from a very young age. Emotionality, excellent skating skills, charisma — such an enviable partner had a partner to match. After childhood unsuccessful attempts to start dating Ivan Bukin, Lena paired up with Nikita Katsalapov. Together they will walk the path to the podium of the Olympics in Sochi to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s great music.
At the time of Sochi, Lena was 19 years old — too young to think about a family, especially for a high-level athlete. She was focused on a career — medals, new programs and what could be called a mark in figure skating. Therefore, even when her duet with Katsalapov broke up, she immediately began skating with Ruslan Zhiganshin.
She spent three bright seasons with the new Ilyin couple. In the very first year, he and Zhiganshin became champions of Russia. We made several memorable programs — including “Carmen” and “Frida”. When Ruslan decided to end his career in 2017, Lena actually lost her minimal chance of participating in the 2018 Olympics — in such a short time it is impossible to find a new partner, skate with him and enlist the support of the federation.
At first, she still tried to stay in figure skating as an athlete — she tried to skate with Anton Shibnev, but this story quickly ended. Then Lena went into mentoring: together with another heroine of Sochi, Yulia Lipnitskaya, they held training camps for young skaters all over Russia and the world. For some time, Lena worked as a coach at the Plushenko Academy — in particular, she was involved in revealing the image of Alexandra Trusova and Alena Kostornaya.
At one point in Elena Ilinykh’s post-sports life there was a sharp turn — she began to realize herself as a ballet dancer. It started with an affair with world ballet star Sergei Polunin in 2018. Not only a romantic, but also a creative relationship developed between them — Sergei immediately saw his beloved in the role of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna in his play “Rasputin”. Lena agreed, but she had to train a lot, work at the machine and fight prejudices in order to dance her part with dignity. “Rasputin” was a success not only in Russia, but also at the London Palladium.
It just so happened that Lena combined her career as a ballet dancer for 5 years with the birth of children. So, in an incredible way, she managed to become a mother of many children, without falling out of the professional and public field. She trained and performed for many hours while pregnant first with her first son and then with her second. The third time was no exception. Elena Ilyinykh (now Elena Polunina, after marriage she took Sergei’s surname) danced the recent “Rasputin” in Moscow just a couple of months after giving birth.
It is not yet known what Sergei and Elena will name their third baby. Considering that the first sons got very unusual rare names — Peace and Gift — there is still reason to expect something original. And, as they say, this will be another special name.
