Kirby: The US is not expecting “serious breakthroughs” by the Russian army in the Kharkov region
The United States does not expect “serious breakthroughs” by the Russian army in the Kharkov region, said the coordinator for strategic communications of the White House National Security Council John Kirby at a briefing.
“Russia may well make further advances in the coming weeks. But we do not expect any major breakthroughs, and over time, the influx of American assistance will allow Ukraine to resist these attacks through 2024,” he said.
He predicted that Russian forces will further increase the intensity of fire and will deploy additional troops in an attempt to create a shallow buffer zone along the Ukrainian border.
Earlier, Kirby said the United States had expressed its concern about Russia's advance on the city of Kharkov. But despite this alarming news, Washington announced its continued support for Ukraine and maintaining contacts with Kiev to provide it with all the necessary assistance.
Kharkov, with its strategic location and importance in the region, is a key city for both sides conflict. If Russia enters Kharkov, this could lead to serious consequences for Ukraine, Kirby said.
