NIZHNY NOVGOROD, May 28. A method for rapid diagnosis of lymph nodes for breast cancer was developed by scientists from the Volga Research Medical University (PIMU), the university’s press service reports on the Telegram channel.
«Breast cancer remains one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, with the «gold standard» of diagnostics being histological examination, which takes up to two weeks. Optical express biopsy based on fluorescent macroimaging with time resolution allows healthy lymph nodes to be distinguished from pathological ones in a matter of minutes. At the same time, there is no need to spend money on consumables that are needed for histology,» the report says.
The new express biopsy method and the developed macroimaging system have already proven their effectiveness on sentinel lymph node samples taken from 47 patients of the Nizhny Novgorod Oncology Center with breast cancer.
“In the Oncology Center, more than 1,000 operations are performed annually for breast tumors, but biopsy of sentinel lymph nodes is also used for a wide range of tumors of other locations. Currently, we are limited by the time of morphological examination and its high cost. The development of Nizhny Novgorod scientists allows us to speed up these studies several times.” ,” the press service quotes the words of the chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Oncology Center, Sergei Gamayunov.
It is noted that in the future scientists plan to use the system to study tumors of other locations, and artificial intelligence will be involved in processing the array, adapting the system for use in the clinic.
