A pipe-like object was thrown near Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as he gave a speech outdoors in the western city of Wakayama on Saturday.
The leader took cover and was uninjured while police detained the suspect at the scene, public broadcaster NHK said.
The footage showed crowds of people fleeing as several police officers appeared to pin the man to the ground before removing him from the scene.
Mr. NHK.
Mr. Kishida to host G7 leaders' Summit in Hiroshima next month. The incident comes after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while campaigning last year by a lone assailant with a makeshift gun.
