Giulio Giaccio was kidnapped by fake cops, murdered and doused in acid in July 2000.
Two Italian gangsters are accused of murdering a man mistake and dissolving his body in acid, offered his relatives tens of thousands of euros as «compensation» before the court.
Giulio Giaccio, 26, was shot in the head and dissolved in acid because two men, supposedly members of the Camorra mafia in Naples, believed that he slept with the sister of one of them.
But it was a case of misidentification — Mr. Giaccio had nothing to do with her or with the Camorra clans that control organized crime in Naples.
The murder happened in 2000, but two The men were only arrested last December after the police received information from a «pentito», a former mobster turned informant.
Cash offer
They are now on trial for murder, but it turns out that they offered the family of the deceased in cash in an apparent attempt to obtain a pardon if found guilty.
In the Italian system, if the perpetrator of a crime offers compensation to the victim or the victim's family, this can be seen as a mitigating circumstance when it comes to issuing verdict.
Salvatore Cammarota, 56, and Carlo Nappi, 64, who already have previous convictions for crimes linked to the mafia, offered the family 60,000 euros plus property worth 120,000 euros.
But the family refused the offer, saying they wanted justice done.
“No amount of money will bring Giulio's life back. After 23 years, the family believes in the justice system they trust,” said Alessandro Motta, the family’s lawyer.
The relatives want to see the “severe punishment” for the two defendants. “They don’t even have a body to mourn,” he said.
The first court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
