The Renault brand left the Chinese market three years ago, but for some reason, on the opening day of the Shanghai Motor Show, it decided to hold the premiere of the updated subcompact the Clio hatchback, whose main market is Europe.
The current fifth-generation Renault Clio debuted in 2019 at the peak of its predecessor's fame: the «fourth» Clio at that time was the most popular B-class passenger car in Europe. In 2021, the Clio was even able to briefly outpace the VW Golf and become an absolute bestseller in Europe, but in 2022 the French hatchback, according to the analytical agency JATO Dynamics, finished with a 27% drop in sales (compared to sales in 2021) to 143,561 units. ., behind Peugeot 208 (206,816 units sold), Dacia Sandero (200,550 units), Toyota Yaris (175,713 units) and Opel Corsa (164,358 units).

The restyling gave the Clio a completely new front end design with eye-catching LED side arrows, narrower headlights without squiggles, a wider grille with pixel ornaments and a more angular bumper. Changed the design of rims (16- or 17-inch). The stern got a new bumper with fake air ducts on the sides. The rear lights are the same, but their housings are now clear instead of tinted.

For the first time, Clio has a sports version called Esprit Alpine, which means «spirit of Alpine». Recall that in 2021, the Alpine brand absorbed the Renault Sport division, and therefore there will no longer be hot hatches in the Renault lineup, but there will be dynamic-looking versions/configurations with Alpine emblems on the sidewalls and other pseudo-sport decor that does not affect dynamic qualities. Clio Esprit Alpine, in particular, has black glossy and matte gray decorative inserts on the body, a pseudo-diffuser in the rear bumper, polished 17-inch wheels with painted cores, special upholstery with contrast stitching, sports front seats, aluminum pedals and other unique touches.

In general, the interior design of the Clio has not changed in any way, but has found new, more environmentally friendly finishing materials based on recycled plastic and plant fibers. The virtual instrument panel is 7 or 10 inches, depending on the modification, the central multimedia screen is 7 or 9.3 inches.

The 1.3-liter petrol turbo engine, which was offered in tandem with a 6-speed «mechanics» or a 7-speed «automatic» type DCT (with two clutches), disappeared from the Clio powertrain line. The only two-pedal version is now the hybrid E-Tech 145, it consists of a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated petrol (94 hp), starter-generator (24 hp), traction electric motor (49 hp) , a unique multi-mode three-shaft automatic transmission and a buffer battery with a capacity of 1.2 kWh. The maximum combined output of the hybrid version is 145 hp.
The traditional Clio power line is 3-cylinder 1.0-liter SCe (65 hp) and TCe (90 hp) petrol engines, TCe gas engine of the same volume (100 hp) and 1.5-liter 4-cylinder dCi turbodiesel (100 hp), they all come with a manual transmission, 5 or 6 speed.
Sales of the updated Renault Clio in Europe will begin in June, prices have not yet been announced. Whether the Clio will have a next generation is still unknown: the upcoming harsh environmental regulations of Euro 7 may make the production of small «hydrocarbon» models unprofitable. Next year, the Renault 5 all-electric subcompact hatchback will join the French brand's model range.
