Manchester United have begun trying to figure out what it will take to sign Harry Kane, with growing expectation that the striker will not sign a new deal with Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
< p>Telegraph Sport understands that United are planning to bid for Kane and that the zeal has begun over his price and how to negotiate with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
The prospect of United making a serious offer for Kane is a nightmare for Levy, who looks set to face the decision of whether to sell the Tottenham star this summer or risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season.
United will be Tottenham's next opponent on Thursday night, when Levy could face the most hostile atmosphere ever from angry supporters for running the club.
Kane's contract will run for 12 months at the end of this season and while his advisers have not commented on his situation, Tottenham sources believe the striker has little chance of returning to Spurs this summer.
United are already well aware of how difficult it will be to negotiate with Levy and that they cannot afford a chase that will last until the last day of the summer transfer window, risking missing other targets in the meantime, such as Napoli's Victor Osimhen.
That's why the Old Trafford club have gone to work now to try and find the best way to get Kane in early and give themselves time to switch back to Osimhen or someone else if Levy is stubborn and willing to risk England. The captain's contract is coming to an end.
Bayern Munich are also looking for a striker this summer, with Kane and Osimhen topping the wish list for new head coach Thomas Tuchel, but it is believed Kane would rather stay in England and continue to chase the record Alan Shearer for Premier League goals.
Price will be higher for Premier League rivals
Sources believe that while Levy may be willing to listen to an £80m offer from abroad for Kane, he will demand at least £100m from English clubs and may even decide to turn down all Premier League offers. /p>
Chelsea's decision to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as the club's new permanent head coach will almost certainly spark speculation that the Argentine is looking to reunite with Kane at Stamford Bridge. But such a scenario is assessed as extremely unlikely, given the rivalry that exists between the two clubs.
Despite Kane scoring his side's consolation goal, Kane showed an inconsolable figure in Tottenham's humiliating 6-1 rout against Newcastle United on Sunday. with the club's four best hopes slipping away and the growing threat of missing out on European qualification entirely.
Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris fears he could be out for some time with an injury that sent him out at half-time against Newcastle. Sources say the issue was legitimate, despite suggestions by some experts that he should have continued.
The search for a manager will affect Kane's future
The mood at Tottenham is now described as as bad as it was during Levy's tenure and the players and staff are said to be losing faith and hope in the work and direction of the club.
Although much loved on a human level, the players were baffled that Antonio Conte's assistant Christian Stellini remained at the club as acting head coach after the Italian left, and were stunned by some of his decisions, including a return to the back four on Sunday. – ahead of his departure on Monday.
Fabio Paratici stepped down as managing director of football last week, meaning Levy is now leading the hunt for a new permanent head coach himself. Luis Enrique is believed to have been contacted by Tottenham but Paratici recommended him and it is not clear if his departure will affect interest in the Spaniard.
Julian Nagelsmann, who would have been Tottenham's first choice, was once again linked with the club after he dropped out of contention for the Chelsea vacancy. But Nagelsmann is seen as needing ironclad guarantees of the size of the wage bill and the quality of the players he can bring to Spurs as part of a squad overhaul.
Arne Slot of Feyenoord and Vincent of Burnley The company also considered interesting for Tottenham along with Celtic's Ange Postecoglou, but the uncertainty surrounding finding a new manager is unlikely to help Kane's future situation.
Levi told the Cambridge Union that Kane «absolutely could win» trophy» with Tottenham, and that he would one day see a statue of the 29-year-old outside the club stadium.
«[Kane] absolutely can win a trophy at Spurs,» Levy replied to a question . “But being a legend is also important. The fact that he is Tottenham Hotspur's top scorer makes history. I hope one day there will be a statue of Harry Kane near our stadium.”
