The words “woman” and “mother” are missing from the University of the Arts London's menopause policy.

Conservative MP Miriam Cates says only women give birth and go through menopause

The words “woman” and “mother” are missing from Politics University of the Arts London regarding menopause, as it turns out.

London's largest specialist university for the arts and design has been accused of virtue, signaling two papers issued to staff last year that do not use gender-specific language.

The guidance, issued by the University of the Arts London (UAL) and discovered by the Policy Exchange think tank in its Biology Matters newsletter, almost entirely excludes the word “woman” from a wide range of staffing policies.< /p>

UAL's staff policy on menopause, which repeatedly mentions “people going through menopause,” begins: “Menopause is a natural stage of life, usually between the ages of 45 and 55, when a person's estrogen levels drop and menstruation stops. “.

It further states: “UAL recognizes that menopause can also occur in colleagues who do not self-identify as women, so this guide and supporting content is designed to support anyone experiencing menopause, regardless of their gender. personality.”

The university's parental leave policy states that the term “maternity” is used to “reflect British law” and adds: “However, this policy applies to people all genders in UAL. can be of any gender (including transgender, non-binary, agender, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, and gender fluid).

The terms “parent-to-be” and “pregnant woman” are used throughout, but there is no mention of “mother” or “woman” in the 12-page document.

In the UAL Staff Handbook, published in 2021, the term “mothers” is mentioned in the section on family-friendly policies, a term that is completely absent from the Equal Parental Leave Policy document.

    Only women can become mothers,

Miriam Cates, Conservative MP for Peniston and Stocksbridge and co-founder of the New Social Covenant Unit, said: “Only women go through menopause and only women can become mothers. Universities should be places of learning, not distributors of misinformation.”

Lee Anderson, vice chairman of the Conservative Party, said: “It just shows what you get from a London liberal arts education. University leaders should stop stuffing their heads with this nonsense.”

Ranil Jayawardena, former Environment Minister Liz Truss, added: “It's crazy that universities should strive to forget the basics of biology – only women can have children.”

Robyn Millar, MP for Aberconwy, accused UAL of following ” dangerous form of political correctness” through leadership and the denial of “biological reality”.

In 2020, UAL was ranked 72nd in the UK's Top 100 LGBT-friendly Employers by Stonewall, an LGBT charity whose leadership on transgender issues has generated controversy.

A spokesman for the University of the Arts London said: “We are proud of our industry-leading equal parental leave policy.”

"The language used accurately reflects the inclusive nature of the policy, which applies to all new parents at UAL , regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or how people become parents.

“Therefore, any woman who becomes a parent is entitled to the benefits of the policy.”
