MOSCOW, December 21 The decision of the European Court does not imply approval or validation of the Super League, according to a release on the official website of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
On Thursday, the European Court declared illegal the actions of the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to ban the creation of the Super League. Thus, inter-club competitions such as the Super League can officially be created under European law.
«UEFA takes note of the decision handed down today by the European Court of Justice in the Super League case. This decision does not constitute an endorsement or validation of the Super League, but rather highlights shortcomings within the UEFA pre-authorization system, a technical aspect that was already recognized and corrected in June 2022 UEFA is confident that its rules are robust and fully compliant with European laws and regulations. UEFA remains resolute in its commitment to supporting the European football system, ensuring that it continues to serve the wider interests of society. We will continue to shape the European sporting model collectively with national associations, leagues, clubs, fans, players, coaches, EU institutions, governments and partners. We believe that the solidarity-based European football pyramid, which fans and all stakeholders have declared as their indispensable model, will be protected from the threat of division by European and national laws,» the release says.
The head of La Liga, Javier Tebas, also spoke about the decision of the European Court on the actions of FIFA and UEFA in relation to the Super League.
«This decision confirms what we have always said: anyone can organize competitions outside the framework of UEFA and FIFA, this cannot be prohibited. No one questioned this. The judicial issue lies in the conditions for holding these competitions in the UEFA and FIFA ecosystem, that is, in «The presence of transparent, clear and objective rules for the approval of new competitions. Already in 2022, UEFA has established a procedure for the approval of new competitions in which the European Super League or any other competition can take part,» Tebas was quoted as saying by the official La Liga website.
In April 2021, 12 European clubs announced the creation of a new tournament — the Super League. A few days later, all English clubs announced their withdrawal from the project, followed by Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid. FIFA, UEFA, national associations, representatives of the football community and fans harshly criticized the idea of a new tournament. The Italian Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona remained committed to the idea of the Super League, against whom UEFA opened a disciplinary case for possible violation of the legal framework of the organization in connection with the Super League project. Later, Juventus, under pressure from sanctions, launched the procedure for withdrawing from the Super League project.
