A 20-year-old woman has been found dead in the famous Grand Canyon in the US state of Arizona after a multi-day search, The Guardian reports.
The National Park Service (NPS) said in a statement that staff found a body under Twin Overlooks on Desert View Drive on Tuesday. The body was handed over to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office.
The victim has been identified as Leticia Castillo, 20, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Officials say she is believed to have entered the Grand Canyon on or around August 3. The National Park Service and the medical examiner's office are investigating.
The discovery of Castillo's body is the third reported death in the Grand Canyon since July 31, according to the National Park Service, The Guardian reports.
On July 31, park rangers found the body of 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia of Hickory, North Carolina, who fell from a cliff about a quarter mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook.
Park officials said Mejia was near the edge of the curb when he accidentally fell, adding that visitors should always maintain a safe distance of at least 6 feet from the edge of the curb and stay behind railings and fences at viewing platforms.
A day later, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a visitor attempting to BASE jump from Yavapai Point on the park's southern edge. Park rangers responded and found the body of the deceased man about 500 feet below the cliff, along with an deployed parachute, the park said.
The deceased man was identified as 43-year-old Justin Guthrie of St. Ann, Missouri, according to reports.
In a statement released after Guthrie's death, the NPS warned that BASE jumping is a «high-risk activity» and is prohibited in all areas of the Grand Canyon.
