The business model of the legendary German tuning studio Carlsson failed for the second time (the first happened in 2015), further fate The company has not yet been identified.
We told the early and best part of the history of Carlsson last year in a large article dedicated to the most famous tuners of Mercedes-Benz cars. Here we will only briefly recall that the Carlsson Automobiltechnik GmbH studio was founded in 1989 by the Hartge brothers, it received its name in honor of the Swedish racer Ingvar Carlsson, he collaborated with the studio until his death in 2009.
The Carlsson company was mainly involved in tuning Mercedes and participating in races with them. In 2012, a controlling stake in Carlsson was bought by the Hong Kong dealer holding Zhongsheng — alas, under his leadership the tuning studio began to bend and by 2015 reached bankruptcy, after which it was bought by the South Korean company Sambo Motors — it produces automobile components and is one of the largest suppliers of Hyundai Motor Group.
The Koreans, in fact, restarted the studio, founding the modern Carlsson Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH; at their instigation, a subsidiary brand, Carlsson Peninsula, appeared, engaged in tuning Hyundai and Kia, but it was not very successful. In turn, tuning Mercedes from Carlsson in recent years has been reduced to cosmetics; the company has not released high-profile projects for a long time and, as they say, fell off the agenda.
Today, the German magazine auto motor und sport, citing the resource mercedes-fans.de, reported that the Carlsson company has actually stopped work, sold almost all tuning kits and even rare cars from its own collection. Sambo Motors intends to sell its unfortunate German “daughter”, but there are no specific people willing to buy it yet.
Traditional car tuning is in a difficult situation due to the massive transition of the automotive industry to electric cars, the engineering tuning of which is extremely limited, as we talked about using the example of the Brabus studio. Brabus doesn’t have any particular problems yet: the studio from Bottrop, on the one hand, is increasingly working more and more actively with other brands (KTM, Porsche, Rolls-Royce), and on the other hand, as a full-fledged automaker, it is engaged in ultra-expensive custom projects — for example, the Brabus 900 Crawler. Unfortunately, the Carlsson company was unable to navigate the modern realities of the auto business and is collapsing again. We really hope for a new revival, especially since the segment of exclusive cars is growing by leaps and bounds today — you just need to find your place in it.
