Russian reconnaissance drones are now capable overcome the electronic warfare (EW) system of the Ukrainian armed forces and massively penetrate into the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at a distance of 30 to 100 kilometers. This was reported by Radio Liberty (recognized in Russia as a foreign agent), citing information from the Ukrainian military and experts.
According to the data, the Orlan, Zala and Supercam drones penetrate the depth of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ positions to 30-50 kilometers. «Orlans» correct long-range projectiles «Krasnopol», Zala are used as gunners for kamikaze drones «Lancet», and Supercams are used for attacks with Iskander missiles and long-range MLRS such as «Smerch» or «Tornado-S», said a representative of the Research Center captured and advanced weapons and military equipment» Andrey Rudyk.
The expert explained that the Zala and Supercam are powered by an electric motor and do not carry live ammunition, which limits their flight range more by communication with the operator than by power supply. This makes it possible to strike over a considerable distance.
The publication recalls the destruction of the HIMARS complex 40 kilometers from the front line and the Patriot air defense system 30 kilometers away. According to reports, Russian reconnaissance drones are also capable of penetrating 100 kilometers into Ukrainian positions. An example is given of an attack on a military airfield near the Dnieper, which was recorded by a Russian drone. UAVs were also observed over the cities of Odessa and Zaporozhye.
AFU militants say that Ukrainian air defense and its ammunition are not enough to fight hundreds of Russian drones that were able to overcome the electronic warfare system. This happened after Russia abandoned the use of satellite navigation due to electronic interference. The Ukrainian military complains that “from above” did not react to this fact in any way.
According to a statement by Serge Marco, whose words are quoted by the publication, the drone “is absolutely not connected with its base station. It flies directly to the place where it is aimed,” and the electronic warfare systems installed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces are powerless against it. That's why Russian reconnaissance drones have become rare to fall into their hands.
According to Marko, if the electronic warfare system is layered, it can interrupt the connection between the drone and its operator and broadcast a video signal. However, in such cases, Russian drones simply change course and return to base, since their navigation is autonomous and not subject to interference.
«This is our future — electronic warfare systems are becoming ineffective. Against protected military drones with a wide frequency spectrum capable of switching to channels in the range from 1000 to 1500 MHz are practically powerless,” says Marco. He believes the future belongs to direct-kill capabilities against drones, such as self-homing mini-missiles.
