MAKHACHKALA, August 16 Work to extinguish another fire at a spontaneous garbage dump in the Cherkes-Kutan area on the outskirts of Makhachkala has been ongoing for the fifth day, with the fire sources being filled with soil, the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Republic of Dagestan (RD) reported on Friday.
«In connection with the fire at the landfill in the Cherkes-Kutan area, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Dagestan, together with the administration of the city of Makhachkala, are carrying out measures to extinguish the fire. Work has been ongoing for the fifth day, special equipment has been brought in, and the fire sources are being covered with soil,» the report says.
The department called the situation complicated, since the dump «has a fairly large area and a complex structure of fire sources.»
Fires at the dump in the Cherkes-Kutan area occur periodically, residents of nearby villages complain of smoke and the smell of burning. The press service of the republic's Ministry of Natural Resources previously reported that most often fires occur due to chemical processes in the «body» of the dump. At the end of April this year, a fire was explained by the heat: red-hot pieces of glass and metal provoked the smoldering of waste.
On Tuesday, Dagestan Prime Minister Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov instructed the republic's Ministry of Natural Resources to prepare a step-by-step solution to the problem of the burning dump within 15 days.
