EKATERINBURG, August 17 A lawyer has appealed the verdict against US and Russian citizen Ksenia Karelina, who was sentenced to 12 years in a general regime penal colony for treason, the press service reported. Sverdlovsk Regional Court.
«I confirm that a complaint was received yesterday evening,» the agency's interlocutor said.
In February, the Russian FSB reported that the illegal activities of a 32-year-old Los Angeles resident, who has dual citizenship of Russia and the United States and was involved in providing financial assistance to Ukraine, had been stopped in Yekaterinburg. The woman was accused of treason and arrested. According to investigators, she sent money to purchase tactical medical supplies, equipment, weapons, and ammunition for the Ukrainian army.
On Thursday, August 15, the Sverdlovsk Regional Court sentenced Karelina to 12 years in a general regime penal colony, 1.5 years of restricted freedom, and a fine of 300,000 rubles.
The state prosecution had requested 15 years in a penal colony for the defendant, followed by two years of restricted freedom and a fine of 500,000 rubles. As the state prosecutor noted to journalists, the decision on filing an appeal against the sentence will be made after it has been studied.
In turn, Karelina's lawyer Mikhail Mushailov reported that he would appeal the court's verdict in the part about the court not sentencing his client to a sentence no lower than the minimum limit of 12 years. The lawyer explained that he would begin the process of exchanging Karelina — this was the wish expressed by her parents.
Mushailov also told journalists that Karelina, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for donating to the Ukrainian army, sent about 50 dollars once. She admitted her guilt.
