Jerry Springer, one of the most influential and controversial figures in television history, has died of cancer at the age of 79.
London-born Springer was best known for his longtime reality show The Jerry Springer Show, which invited guests to reveal the often embarrassing details of their lives to the delight of the audience.
A family rep confirmed to TMZ that he was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and this week his health deteriorated. He died at his home in the Chicago area.

Springer himself described the show as «escapist entertainment» while others saw the show as contributing to decadence American social values.
His death was celebrated by social media users who shared footage from the wildest episodes.
David Axelrod, chief campaign strategist for Barack Obama's presidential campaigns, tweeted: «Jerry Springer will be remembered as ringmaster for an embarrassing tabloid-style TV show. But I had met him before when he was mayor and a progressive rebel candidate for governor of Ohio in the race I was covering. He was funny, modest & sharp."
Springer was born in Highgate London Underground station when it was used as a cover from German bombing raids during World War II.
